We will closely monitor this situation and stay in contact with DHEC as we move forward. We look forward to getting back to practice and play as conditions permit.

Thanks to our awesome bus drivers and cafeteria workers, the School District of Newberry County provided 147,276 meals for our children during the building closures the past month. Meals will continue to be provided each Monday at various locations throughout the district.

April 22, 2020

All Newberry County School District schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year, per the governor’s announcement. Additional information regarding instructional packets, graduation, textbook returns, etc. will be provided at a later date.

We thank all of our students and parents for their cooperation during this time. We also want to thank all of our teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, administrators, and all other staff members for the work they are doing while our students are not in school. We miss you all and look forward to when we can get together again.

The South Carolina Department of Education has requested additional information from districts regarding internet access. In an effort to assess internet capabilities within our district, we are asking that all parents complete the following survey by Tuesday, April 14. Internet is defined as ability to use a desktop, laptop, or tablet at home. For the purpose of this survey, access to internet solely through a smart phone is NOT considered internet access. Please complete a separate survey for each child who attends a school in Newberry County. Even if you previously completed a survey through your school, please take a moment to provide the information requested at https://bit.ly/SDNCInternetSurvey.

March 26, 2020

The next set of instructional packets is to be picked up on Monday and Tuesday, March 30 and 31 from 9 am – 1 pm. The first set of packets are asked to be returned at this time. Please make sure your child’s name is on the work that is returned. If your child has not completed all of packet 1, please have them continue to work on that packet in addition to packet 2, which provides all assignments through May 1. The set up at each school will be a drive thru where you will not need to leave the car. If you have a high school student who takes courses from the career center, please make sure you also go to the career center to pick up student work. Our teachers are working to respond to parents via email. Please continue to reach out to your child’s teachers for assistance.

Report cards will be available via parent portal beginning March 30. Parents are encouraged to view student grades in Parent Portal. If you do not have a Parent Portal login, the request for access can be found on our district’s website – click on the COVID-19 link on the main page. The request form must be completed and sent via email to your child’s school to receive the access code. If you do not have a way to access to Parent Portal and would like to receive your child’s Report Card, please contact your child’s school and it will be mailed to you. Pre-K – Grade 2 and Montessori report cards will be distributed with the new instructional packets on March 30 and 31.

Beginning Monday, March 30, we will begin distributing 5 days’ worth of meals to children. At the pick up and delivery sites, students will receive 5 breakfast meals and 5 lunch meals for the week. This will reduce the number of times that parents are going to the pick up and delivery sites. Again, we will only be distributing meals on Mondays for the duration of the school closure. Our school and community sites and times remain the same. Please only select one site to serve all of your children. When approaching the line, indicate the number of meals needed by holding up a hand count. We will put the meals in the trunk or through a window. You will not need to exit the vehicle to receive these meals.

As we continue to receive updated information about our schools, we want to keep all of our families informed.

Yesterday, the Governor issued an extension to the school closure through April 30. Our schools and offices will remain closed per the Governor’s order.

Our meal pickup and delivery will continue tomorrow. We are asking families to hold up a sign or fingers to indicate how many children need meals. If possible, we would prefer to place the meals in the trunk of the cars to reduce the chance of exposure. If the trunk is not an option, please roll down a window. No one will need to get out of the car for this service.

We thank you all for your continued support and encourage all of you to continue to frequently wash your hands and maintain appropriate social distancing.

March 24, 2020

Governor Henry McMaster and South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman today released the following joint statement announcing that South Carolina’s schools will remain closed for the duration of the month of April:

“At this time, students, parents, and families should plan for South Carolina’s schools to remain closed through the month of April. Our dedicated teachers and school administrators have done a tremendous job in making it possible for our students to learn at home. We understand that the prospect of schools remaining closed for an extended period of time places stress and strain on parents and children. Rest assured, if there is any way to safely open our schools earlier, we will do that, but schools must remain closed to protect the health and safety of South Carolinians.”

What you need to know about Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)

Lo que necesita saber sobre la enfermedad del coronavirus 2019(COVID-19)

The district is closely monitoring and following guidance from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDOE), and the Newberry County Emergency Services. Our primary focus is to keep our students and our community safe while providing continuity of service to students. We will continue to update our families and community as changes occur.

Specific steps being taken by the district include:

●Reviewing our emergency response plans with key personnel across schools and departments

●Reminding students and staff to limit physical contact, follow appropriate respiratory etiquette, and to regularly and thoroughly wash hands

●Reminding parents and employees that students or staff who have symptoms of a respiratory illness should not come to school or work

●Requesting that students who have a household member who has been recommended for home isolation not return to school until the isolation period has ended in their household

●Monitoring absenteeism and notifying local health officials about large increases in student or staff absences

●Strengthening procedures to isolate and send home students and staff who are sick at school as soon as symptoms present

●Enhancing existing cleaning and disinfecting processes and frequency

RESPONSE IN THE EVENT OF A LOCAL OUTBREAK

We will follow all available guidance provided by DHEC, the CDC, the SCDOE, and the Newberry County Emergency Services in addition to determining specific responses that may be appropriate and in the best interest of our students and staff. Such responses could include:

●Increased communication with families

●Coordinated student handwashing and enhanced screening of people with respiratory symptoms or potential exposure within our schools

●Further increasing the frequency and methods of cleaning hard surfaces such as doorknobs and desks

●Postponement or cancellation of extra-curricular events, after-school activities, and field trips

●Closure of one or more schools with implementation of methods for continued academic instruction at home

Should a case of coronavirus be confirmed by DHEC among our students, staff and families, we will immediately notify all employees and parents and provide recommendations and next steps.

FAMILIES CAN HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS

Stop the Spread of Germs (Video)(Click link to learn more)

The partnership of our families is a critical component of our district’s preparation and response to the potential spreading of coronavirus. Families are advised to remain informed and closely follow guidance from the CDC (Click link to learn more).

A brief summary of these includes:

●Stop germs by washing your hands frequently and thoroughly. Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important things you can do to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy.

●Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

●Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

●Stay home when you are sick.

●Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

●Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces.

All students and staff who are experiencing illness – particularly fever, cough or shortness of breath – are asked to remain at home until their symptoms have cleared.

MARCH 6, 2020

Our district continues to monitor the emerging novel coronavirus outbreak. We will work closely with our contacts at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) to stay informed of any developments of confirmed cases in the US and implement any recommendations or guidelines from the CDC or SC DHEC as they are determined.

While this virus has not affected our area at present, DHEC and CDC have great resources available for parents and community members to learn about the virus, symptoms, preventative measures and current confirmed cases.

As always, we encourage everyone to practice proper handwashing, cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and stay home if ill. It is all of us working together that will help decrease the spread of germs.
