Mission:

The mission of the Whitmire Community School Library Media Center is to foster a love of reading and to assist members of the learning community in becoming effective users of ideas, information, and technology.

South Carolina Book Awards

The media center provides approximately 9,000 books and ebooks for grades PK-12 which support the classroom curriculum and recreational reading. The media center program includes student orientation, WCS Morning and Elementary News Shows, South Carolina Book Awards, Children's Book Week, Read Across America, Teen Read week, SC Read-In, Middle and High School book clubs, gaming activities, and Service Learning units.

Students may visit the media center to read, check out books, research class assignments, design multimedia presentations, create, and play chess. Food, drinks, and gum are not permitted in the media center. Students are expected to have a signed pass from their classroom teacher stating the purpose of the visit.

Classes may use the research lab for inquiry projects.Teachers should schedule lab classes by emailing Ms. Hagen. Students may check out laptops for individual research within the media center. Laptops may not be taken home.

Media Specialists Donna Hagen and Ginna Vedder are certified teachers with Masters Degrees in Library and Information Science. They have extensive backgrounds in literacy and reading. They provide instruction in research, information literacy, and media literacy. They coordinate the use of technology resources with classroom teachers to enhance the instructional program. Media Assistant Maurice Wyatt assists elementary and high school students with book check out. He coaches JV football and basketball.
